In this research, an efficient method for the one-pot synthesis of 2-aminothiazolesviathe reaction of thiourea with methylcarbonyls in the presence of iodine as an oxidant reagent has been developed using asparagine as a green organocatalyst at 80 degrees C in DMSO solvent. Advantages of this efficient method include greener and cleaner conditions, easy isolation of products, higher purity and excellent yield of products, and convenient manipulation.

In the field of catalysis, material scientists pay much attention to tuning the activity and chemoselectivity of metal nanoparticles. Herein, we design and successfully synthesize a series of Co NPs which show high performance on hydrogenation of nitroarenes with both activity and chemoselectivity. Co-0.15@C/PC preferentially activates the -C=O bond over -NO2 in water with ammonia borane (AB); however, when the hydrogen source is changes to hydrazine hydrate (HH), the results are the opposite. The Co-based catalyst exhibits exceptionally high catalytic activity (with a TOF value of 10512 h(-1), which is approximately 100 times than the akin catalysts) and chemo-selectivity for the hydrogenation of nitro compounds under mild conditions. Additionally, the catalyst can be separated easily by a magnet and shows prominent stabilit, which means that it can be reused for at least 10 cycles.

A series of novel (E)-4-oxo-2-crotonamide derivatives were designed and synthesized to find potent antituberculosis agents. All the target compounds were evaluated for their in vitro activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H(37)Rv(MTB). Results reveal that 4-phenyl moiety at part A and short methyl group at part C were found to be favorable. Most of the derivatives displayed promising activity against MTB with MIC ranging from 0.125 to 4 mu g/mL. Especially, compound IIIa16 was found to have the best activity with MIC of 0.125 mu g/mL against MTB and with MIC in the range of 0.05-0.48 mu g/mL against drug-resistant clinical MTB isolates.

Eight heteroleptic nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes of the type [M(L1-4)(nap)(2)] (1-8), where L1-4 = 2-(1-(4-substitutedphenyl)ethylidene)-hydrazinecarbothioamide, nap = naproxen, and M = Ni(II) or Cu(II), have been synthesized and characterized. UV-vis and EPR spectral studies showed distorted octahedral geometry around metal(II) ions. The cyclic voltammogram of complexes 1-8 displayed an irreversible one-electron transfer process in the cathodic region (E-pc = -0.66 to -1.43 V), and nickel(II) complexes 1-4 displayed an irreversible one-electron oxidation process in the anodic region (E-pa = 0.75 to 1.10 V). The obtained magnetic moment values (1.82-1.93 mu(B)) for copper(II) complexes 5-8 indicate distortion from octahedral geometry, which is further supported by EPR studies. The geometry of the complexes is retained in both solid and solution phases as evidenced from UV-vis and EPR studies. All the complexes showed stability for almost 72 h in biologically relevant solutions. The reducing ability of the copper(II) complexes in the presence of ascorbic acid was analyzed by UV-vis and cyclic voltammetry techniques, which indicates the reduction of the copper(II) to a copper(I) center, and possible interaction within the cells. An in vitro antiproliferative study revealed the nontoxic nature of complexes to normal human dermal fibroblast (NHDF) up to a concentration of 100 ng/mL. The antiproliferative activity of the complexes was tested against three cancerous (human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7), hepatoma (HepG2), and lung (A549)) cell lines using MTT reduction assay, which showed enhanced activity for complexes 4 and 8 containing the hydrophobic substituent. Apoptotic and cellular uptake studies showed that complex 8 is readily taken up by HepG2 cell lines and induces ROS-mediated mitochondrial and caspase-dependent apoptosis. In silico studies indicated hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic, and pi-pair (pi-pi, pi-sigma, and pi-cation) interactions between the complexes and EGFR/VEGFR2 kinase receptors.

A series of robust metallo-aerogels are readily fabricated by pyrolysis of xerogels derived from chitosan-metal (M = Fe, Co, Ni) hydrogels. Owing to the strong coordination between metal ions and the functional groups (NH2 and OH) of chitosan, metallo-aerogels consisting of encapsulated metal-nanoparticles (MNPs) by graphite shells were obtained, as supported by various characterizations including high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman. The resulting metallo-aerogels could be functioned as highly stable, efficient and selective nanocatalysts towards the hydrogenation of nitroarenes to amines at low catalyst loading (1.2 mol.%-2.4 mol.%). Remarkably, the metallo-aerogels could be reused for more than 30 runs without obvious loss of activity and selectivity. These distinguished performances were attributed to the graphitic shells formed during the pyrolysis, which hampered the possible aggregation of MNPs, prevented metal leaching and increased their stability.

The selective hydrogenation of nitro compounds into their corresponding azo compounds is challenging in organic synthesis. In this study, we have developed a facile and efficient catalytic system for the transformation of nitro compounds into azo compounds under mild conditions over a heterogeneous cobalt catalyst (Co-N-x/C-800-AT). The Co-N-x/C-800-AT catalyst was found to be highly active for the reductive-coupling of nitro compounds into azo compounds in ethanol at 110 degrees C and 2.5 bar H-2 pressure with the addition of NaOH as an additive, affording structurally-diverse azo compounds with satisfactory yields (70.4-98.3%). The developed method demonstrated several advantages such as high catalytic activity and high selectivity with tolerance to other functional groups and high stability.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are applied widely in organic catalysis; however, no precedent has been reported in polymerization catalysis. Herein, we report the new application of COFs for polymerization catalysis. Different amounts of homogeneous Rh catalyst are incorporated into the COF via post-treatment to give a series of TPB-DMTP-COF-X wt % Rh (b-e) containing varying amounts of Rh from 2.74 to 11.38 wt %. In contrast to the known Rh catalysts, TPB-DMTP-COF-X wt % Rh (b-e) display an uncommon synergistic effect and exceptional steric confinement effect of nanochannels. Therefore, they possess the advantages of both homogeneous catalysts in high activity and selectivity and heterogeneous catalysts in stability and recyclability with extremely high activity up to 1.3 x 10(7) g . mol(Rh)(-1)center dot h(-1) and cis-selectivity up to 99% and can be readily recycled and reused five times in the polymerization of phenylacetylene and its derivatives, affording cis-transoidal polyphenylacetylene and its derivatives having helical structures, aggregation-induced emission properties, or fluorescence properties with narrow molecular weight distributions.

The first naked (Lewis base-free) cationic Ca amidinate complex [(AmCa)-Am-tBu-Ca-DIPP(C6H6)](+)[B(C6F5)(4)](-) was prepared in 62 % yield {(AmDIPP)-Am-tBu = tBuC(N-DIPP)(2); DIPP = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl} by reaction of [(AmCaH)-Am-tBu-Ca-DIPP](2) with [Ph3C](+)[B(C6F5)(4)](-) in chlorobenzene. The ether-free complex (AmCaN)-Am-tBu-Ca-DIPP(SiMe3)(2) was obtained by removal of diethyl ether from its ether adduct. Crystal structures show that the amidinate ligand in both complexes is N,Aryl-chelating. In this coordination mode the bulk of the amidinate ligand is comparable to that of a DIPP-substituted beta-diketiminate ligand. Isomers with N,N-coordinating amidinate ligands are circa 15 kcal/mol higher in energy and this coordination mode is only present in case additional ether ligands compensate for energy loss or in case of space limitation at the metal, e.g. in homoleptic (Am-tBu(DIPP))(2)Ca. A series of four Ca amidinate complexes, (AmCaX)-Am-tBu-Ca-DIPP, were tested in the catalytic hydroboration of ketones and aldehydes by pinacolborane (HBpin). Catalytic activities increase for X- = I- < B(C6F5)(4)(-) < (Me3Si)(2)N- approximate to H-. For catalysts with unreactive anions, like I- or B(C6F5)(4)(-), catalyst performance increases with the Lewis acidity of the metal and a mechanism is proposed in which HBpin and ketone coordinate to the Ca2+ ion which is followed by direct hydroboration.
