2,3-Dihydro-1,4-benzodioxin-5-ylinethanol (1.01 g, 6.07 mmol) was dissolved in methylene chloride (60 mL). Manganese dioxide (3.81 g, 43.8 mmol) was added, and then the mixture was stirred in a nitrogen atmosphere at room temperature for 24 hours. Manganese dioxide was separated by filtration and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (elution solvent: ethyl acetate/hexane = 1/4) to give the target compound (835 mg, yield: 84%) as a colorless oil. 1H-NMR (CDCl3, 400MHz):delta ppm: 4.32-4.34 (2H, m), 4.38-4.41 (2H, m), 6.91 (1H, t, J=7.8Hz), 7.10 (1H, dd, J=1.6, 7.8Hz), 7.40 (1H, dd, J=1.6, 7.8Hz). MS (EI) m/z: 164.0468 (M+)
