A new heterogeneous catalyst for the solvent-free efficient oxidation of alcohols has been developed for a sustainable future with a green reaction technology. This work presents the additive and solvent-free catalytic conversions of primary and secondary alcohols as well as diols into their corresponding carbonyl compounds in moderate to excellent yields. The developed catalyst system is green as it oxidises alcohols under solvent-free conditions and uses simple atmospheric oxygen as the oxidising agent. We have experimentally proved that the alcohol oxidation reaction proceeds through an aerobic oxidative pathway. The double perovskite oxide catalyst CaLaScRuO(6+delta)was prepared by the conventional solid-state method. The crystal structure was refined and characterized thoroughly to observe the effect of mixed valent Ru5+/Ru(4+)ions in the oxygen-rich disordered structure. The conversion of diols into four-, five- and six-membered lactones can enhance the novelty of the present catalyst. The catalyst was found to be very selective for the alcohol oxidation and resulted in the oxidised product without affecting the other functional groups present in the aromatic ring. A reaction mechanism has been proposed for understanding the possible role of mixed metals in heterogeneous catalysis.

A method to achieve rhodium(III)-catalyzed, potassium acetate enabled intermolecular C-H amination of ketoximes using various benzenesulfonamide, especially 4-nitrobenzenesulfonamide is reported. Various aryl ketoximes substituted with electron-withdrawing functional groups were all well tolerated and produced the corresponding products in moderate to good yields. A preliminary mechanistic study revealed that potassium acetate is essential to realizing intermolecular amination.

Malaria remains one of the most deadly infectious diseases, causing hundreds of thousands of deaths each year, primarily in young children and pregnant mothers. Here, we report the discovery and derivatization of a series of pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridines targeting Plasmodium falciparum, the deadliest species of the malaria parasite. Hit compounds in this series display sub-micromolar in vitro activity against the intraerythrocytic stage of the parasite as well as little to no toxicity against the human fibroblast BJ and liver HepG2 cell lines. In addition, our hit compounds show good activity against the liver stage of the parasite but little activity against the gametocyte stage. Parasitological profiles, including rate of killing, docking, and molecular dynamics studies, suggest that our compounds may target the Q(o) binding site of cytochrome bc(1).

Irradiated by visible light, the recyclable (PhTe)(2)-catalyzed oxidative deoximation reaction could occur under mild conditions. In comparison with the thermo reaction, the method employed reduced catalyst loading (1 mol% vs. 2.5 mol%), but afforded elevated product yields with expanded substrate scope. Herein, N,S-codoped carbon materials embedded with ultrafine and well-distributed Co nanoparticles (1.14 wt % Co) were prepared through pyrolysis of the hybrids of SNW-1 and Co(Ac)(2) coated with glucose. It was observed by TEM and XRD that Co nanoparticles (NPs) were entrapped in doped carbon shells uniformly. The glucose coating presented a significant impact on the size distribution of Co NPs and doped modes of heteroatoms, especially the S species. The catalyst displayed outstanding activity for catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) with formic acid under the base-free system. Encouragingly, diverse secondary amines were produced in excellent yields through the domino reaction of hydrogenation and reductive amination. Remarkably, the catalyst with ultrafine Co NPs showed good durability under harsh reaction conditions and displayed no significant loss in both activity and selectivity in 5 runs. This was attributed to the protection of constructed N,S dual-doped carbon shells. Hence, we offer an alternative strategy for the construction of dual-doped carbon materials trapped with ultrafine transition metal, which can be further applied in various catalytic processes.

In order to introduce the concept of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), an important class of predictable crystalline porous polymers, an integrated laboratory experiment for advanced organic chemistry students is reported. The importance of these kind of polymers and their multiple applications are presented as a part of key concepts in polymer and organic chemistry, bridging these disciplines to materials science. Students carry out the synthesis and characterization of an imine-linked COF and its building blocks. The polymer is formed at room temperature by using solvent-assisted synthesis and mechanochemistry. Students are trained in solid state characterization techniques, including FTIR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), C-13 NMR cross-polarization-magic angle spinning (CP-MAS) NMR spectroscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), which are essential in the important field of reticular chemistry. Therefore, this lab experience constitutes a practical introduction to COFs.

A new rhodium(III)-triphenylphosphine mixed ligand complex, [Rh(PPh3)(L)Cl-2] (1) is synthesized by benzylic C-S bond cleavage of L-CH2Ph ligand (where, L-CH2Ph = 2-(benzylthio)-N-(pyridin-2-ylmethylene)aniline). The complex is thoroughly characterized by several spectroscopic techniques. Geometry of the complex is confirmed by single crystal X-ray crystallography. Electronic structure, redox properties, absorption and emission properties of the complex were studied. DFT and TDDFT calculations were carried out to interpret the electronic structure and absorption properties of the complex respectively. The synthesized Rh(III) complex was tested as catalyst towards transfer hydrogenation reaction of ketones in iPrOH and an excellent catalytic conversion was observed under mild conditions.
