Zinc linked amino acid complex, Zn(l-proline)(2), is considered as a green catalyst for the synthesis of novel series of pyrimidine derivatives 5a-q. The pyrimidines 5a-q were prepared via two pathways: the first is a one-pot reaction of guanidines 3(a-c) with aromatic aldehyde 1 and acetophenones 2; and the second one is the reaction of guanidines 3(a-c) with different chalcones 4(a-j) in aqueous medium. The simplicity of the operation, the short reaction time, and the high efficiency (97%) are the main advantages of this protocol. Methods: A population-based case-control study design was employed using all 6880 patients diagnosed in Iceland between 2003-2017 with first-time BCC, SCCis, or invasive SCC, and 69,620 population controls. Multivariate odds ratios (ORs) were calculated using conditional logistic regression. Results: Metformin was associated with a lower risk of developing BCC (OR, 0.71; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.61-0.83), even at low doses. No increased risk of developing SCC was observed. SCCis risk was mildly elevated in the 501-1500 daily dose unit category (OR, 1.40; 95% CI, 1.00-1.96). Limitations: This study was retrospective in nature with the inability to adjust for ultraviolet exposure, Fitzpatrick skin type, and comorbidities. Conclusion: Metformin is associated with decreased risk of BCC development, even at low doses. Metformin might have potential as a chemoprotective agent for patients at high risk of BCC, although this will need confirmation in future studies.

Herein, we developed a Ru(II)(BPGA) complex that could be used to catalyze chemo- and site-selective C-H oxidation. The described ruthenium complex was designed by replacing one pyridyl group on tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine with an electron-donating amide ligand that was critical for promoting this type of reaction. The reaction of LH [L = {(ArNH)(ArN)-C=N-C=(NAr)(NHAr)}; Ar =2,6-Et-2-C6H3] with a commercially available alane amine adduct (H3Al center dot NMe2Et) in toluene resulted in the formation of a conjugated bis-guanidinate (CBG)-supported aluminum dihydride complex, i.e., LAIH(2) (1), in good yield. The new complex has been thoroughly characterized by multinuclear magnetic resonance, IR, mass, and elemental analyses, including single-crystal structural studies. Further, we have demonstrated the aluminum-catalyzed hydroboration of a variety of nitriles and alkynes. Moreover, aluminum-catalyzed hydroboration is expanded to more challenging substrates such as alkene, pyridine, imine, carbodiimide, and isocyanides. One-step base promoted strategy for cyanation of alpha,alpha-diaryl alcohols has been developed under mild and transition metal-free conditions. Hollow porous carbon (HPC) composed of inner voids and outer shells, is receiving increasing attention in constructing supported catalysts for diverse applications. It is of great allure but still challenging to controllably tune the secondary porous structure (pore in the outer shells) of the HPC support to improve the performance of the catalysts. Herein, a Ni-substituted ZIF-67 was used as a precursor to prepare HPC-supported catalysts. We found that Ni2+ can partially substitute Co2+ to create defected structure within ZIF-67, and the secondary pore structure of the derived HPC can be facilely tuned by adjusting the ratio of Ni2+ to Co2+. Catalyst HPC-Ni-ZIF-1 with hierarchical secondary pore and the largest pore volume exhibits an excellent catalytic performance for the hydrogenation of nitro compounds to corresponding amino compounds.

The synthesis, electronic structure, and reactivity of a uranium metallacyclopropene were comprehensively studied. Addition of diphenylacetylene (PhC equivalent to CPh) to the uranium phosphinidene metallocene [eta(5)-1,2,4-(Me3C)(3)C5H2](2)U=P-2,4,6-tBu(3)C(6)H(2) (1) yields the stable uranium metallacyclopropene, [eta(5)-1,2,4-(Me3C)(3)C5H2](2)U[eta(2)-C2Ph2] (2). Based on density functional theory (DFT) results the 5f orbital contributions to the bonding within the metallacyclopropene U-(eta(2)-C=C) moiety increases significantly compared to the related Th-IV compound [eta(5)-1,2,4-(Me3C)(3)C5H2](2)Th[eta(2)-C2Ph2], which also results in more covalent bonds between the [eta(5)-1,2,4-(Me3C)(3)C5H2](2)U2+ and [eta(2)-C2Ph2](2-) fragments. Although the thorium and uranium complexes are structurally closely related, different reaction patterns are therefore observed. For example, 2 reacts as a masked synthon for the low-valent uranium(II) metallocene [eta(5)-1,2,4-(Me3C)(3)C5H2](2)U-II when reacted with Ph2E2 (E=S, Se), alkynes and a variety of hetero-unsaturated molecules such as imines, ketazine, bipy, nitriles, organic azides, and azo derivatives.
