A new methodology for the carbonylative transformation of N-fluoro-sulfonamides into N-sulfonyl-beta-homoproline esters has been described. In the presence of a catalytic amount of Cu(OTf)(2), a range of beta-homoproline derivatives were prepared in moderate to good yield. The reaction proceeds via the intramolecular cyclization and intermolecular carbonylation of a free carbon radical. Notably, this procedure offers the possibility to build potential functionalized bioactive molecules.

Continued development of the Sonogashira coupling has made it a well established and versatile reaction for the straightforward formation of C-C bonds, forging the carbon skeletons of broadly useful functionalized molecules. However, asymmetric Sonogashira coupling, particularly for C(sp(3))-C(sp) bond formation, has remained largely unexplored. Here we demonstrate a general stereoconvergent Sonogashira C(sp(3))-C(sp) cross-coupling of a broad range of terminal alkynes and racemic alkyl halides (>120 examples) that are enabled by copper-catalysed radical-involved alkynylation using a chiral cinchona alkaloid-based P,N-ligand. Industrially relevant acetylene and propyne are successfully incorporated, laying the foundation for scalable and economic synthetic applications. The potential utility of this method is demonstrated in the facile synthesis of stereoenriched bioactive or functional molecule derivatives, medicinal compounds and natural products that feature a range of chiral C(sp(3))-C(sp/sp(2)/sp(3)) bonds. This work emphasizes the importance of radical species for developing enantioconvergent transformations.

Catalytic hydrogenation of nitroaromatics is an environment-benign strategy to produce industrially important aniline intermediates. Herein, we report that Fe(OH)(x) deposition on Pt nanocrystals to give Fe(OH)(x)/Pt, enables the selective hydrogenation of nitro groups into amino groups without hydrogenating other functional groups on the aromatic ring. The unique catalytic behavior is identified to be associated with the Fe-III-OH-Pt interfaces. While H-2 activation occurs on exposed Pt atoms to ensure the high activity, the high selectivity towards the production of substituted aniline originates from the Fe-III-OH-Pt interfaces. In situ IR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and isotope effect studies reveal that the Fe3+/Fe2+ redox couple facilitates the hydrodeoxygenation of the -NO2 group during hydrogenation catalysis. Benefitting from Fe-III-OH-Pt interfaces, the Fe(OH)(x)/Pt catalysts exhibit high catalytic performance towards a broad range of substituted nitroarenes.

A Lewis base supported terminal uranium phosphinidene, [eta(5)-1,3-(Me3C)(2)C5H3]2U(= P-2,4,6-(Bu3C6H2)-Bu-t)(OPMe3) (5), is isolated from the reaction of the uranium methyl chloride [eta(5)- 1,3-(Me3C)(2)C5H3](2)U(Cl) Me (4) with 2, 4, 6-(Me3C)(3)C6H2PHK in toluene in the presence of Me3PO. Moreover, the reactivity of uranium phospinidene 5 toward a series of small molecules was comprehensively explored. While no reactivity of 5 with internal alkynes is observed attributed to steric hindrance, it readily reacts in good yields with various small molecules including isothiocyanates, aldehydes, imines, diazenes, carbodiimides, nitriles, isonitriles, and organic azides, yielding uranium sulfidos, oxidos, metallaheterocycles, and imido complexes.

The reaction of coordinatively unsaturated Co(II) PCP pincer complexes with nitric oxide leads to the formation of new, air-stable, diamagnetic mono nitrosyl compounds. The synthesis and characterization of five- and four-coordinate Co(III) and Co(I) nitrosyl pincer complexes based on three different ligand scaffolds is described. Passing NO through a solution of [Co(PCPNMe-iPr)Cl], [Co(PCPO-iPr)Cl] or [Co(PCPCH2-iPr)Br] led to the formation of the low-spin complex [Co(PCP-iPr)(NO)-X] with a strongly bent NO ligand. Treatment of the latter species with (X = CI, Br) AgBF4 led to chloride abstraction and formation of cationic square-planar Co(I) complexes of the type [Co(PCP-iPr)(NO)](+) featuring a linear NO group. This reaction could be viewed as a formal two electron reduction of the metal center by the NO radical from Co(III) to Co(I), if NO is counted as NO+. Hence, these systems can be described as {CoNO}(8) according to the Enemark-Feltham convention. X-ray structures, spectroscopic and electrochemical data of all nitrosyl complexes are presented. Heteroatom-doped porous carbon materials have exhibited promising applications in various fields. In this work, sulfur, nitrogen co-doped carbon materials (SNCs) with abundant pore structure were prepared by pyrolysis of sulfur, nitrogen-containing porous organic polymers (POPs) mixed with nano-CaCO3 at high temperature. Among the resultant materials, SNC-Ca-850 possesses a relatively high level of doped heteroatoms and exhibits an excellent catalytic performance for the selective oxidation of benzylic C-H bonds. It is noteworthy that nano-CaCO3 increases the doped sulfur content in the synthesized carbon materials to a large extent and impacts the existence modes of sulfur. In addition, it enhances the porous structure and specific surface area of the resultant SNCs significantly. This work provides a viable strategy to promote the doping of sulfur into carbon materials during the pyrolysis process.

A strategy for heterogeneous copper(I) mesoporous silica [Cu(I)-SBA-15] mediated catalytic reduction has been developed for the reduction of various nitroarenes in excellent yields. In addition to alcothermal strategy, other strategies have been attempted for the preparation of Cu(I) substituted mesoporous silica, however, the desired oxidation state is obtained only through alcothermal strategy. The crystalline phases and oxidation state of synthesized materials were characterized by XRD and XPS measurements and tested for catalytic reduction of nitroarenes. Among the tested materials, the best catalytic reduction of nitroarenes with an excellent substrate scope and good catalytic reusability was established by Cu(I)-SBA-15 material. The reduction kinetics and the controlled experimental studies reveal that the reaction proceeds through pseudo-first-order kinetics and nitrosobenzene intermediate pathway.
