(+)-Usnic acid, a product of secondary metabolism in lichens, has displayed a broad range of biological properties such as antitumor, antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and insecticidal activities. Interested by these pharmacological activities and to tap into its potential, we herein present the synthesis and biological evaluation of new usnic acid enaminone-conjugated 1,2,3-triazoles 10-44 as antimycobacterial agents. (+)-Usnic acid was condensed with propargyl amine to give usnic acid enaminone 8 with a terminal ethynyl moiety. It was further reacted with various azides A1-A35 under copper catalysis to give triazoles 10-44 in good yields. Among the synthesized compounds, saccharin derivative 36 proved to be the most active analogue, inhibiting Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) at an MIC value of 2.5 mu M. Analogues 16 and 27, with 3,4-difluorophenacyl and 2-acylnaphthalene units, respectively, inhibited Mtb at MIC values of 5.4 and 5.3 mu M, respectively. Among the tested Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, the new derivatives were active on Bacillus subtilis, with compounds 18 [3-(trifluoromethyl)phenacyl] and 29 (N-acylmorpholinyl) showing inhibitory concentrations of 41 and 90.7 mu M, respectively, while they were inactive on the other tested bacterial strains. Overall, the study presented here is useful for converting natural (+)-usnic acid into antitubercular and antibacterial agents via incorporation of enaminone and 1,2,3-triazole functionalities.

Ni3Sn2 alloy catalysts supported on various metal oxides (TiO2, Al2O3, ZrO2, SnO2, and CeO2) were successfully prepared by simple hydrothermal method and then applied to the hydrogenation of 4-nitrostyrene under H-2 3.0 MPa at 423 K. All the supported catalysts hydrogenated the nitro group more preferentially than the olefin group from the initial reaction stages, showing 100% chemoselectivities towards the desired 4-aminostyrene. This may be attributed to sigma-interaction between the oxygen lone pairs in the nitro group and Sn atoms in Ni3Sn2 alloy. By prolonging the reaction times, the 4-aminostyrene yields increased and finally reached the maximum yields. Among the catalysts, Ni3Sn2/TiO2 alloy catalyst showed the highest catalytic activity with remarkably high chemoselectivity towards 4-aminostyrene. The conversion and chemoselectivity were 100% and 79%, respectively, at a reaction time of only 2.5 h. From the physical and chemical characterization of the supported catalysts, it was clear that the catalytic activity was correlated with H-2 uptake. The application of the best catalyst for the hydrogenation of a wide variety of substituted nitroarenes resulted in the chemoselective formation of the corresponding aminoarenes.

A convenient one-pot, three-component reaction has been developed for the synthesis of 3-aroylimidazo[1,2-a]-N-hetero-cycles from aryl ketones and 2-amino-N-heterocycles using dimethyl sulfoxide as a methylene donor. The reaction proceeds smoothly catalyzed by I-2 in the presence of K2S2O8 and affords the desired products in moderate to good yields. This protocol offers significant superiority in accessing biologically active 3-aroylimidazo[1,2-a]-N-heterocycles with various substitution patterns.

Preparation of 2,2-disubstituted and 2-monosubstituted alkenylboronic acid esters from aliphatic and aromatic ketones and aldehydes by the boron-Wittig olefination with bis[(pinacolato)boryl]methane was examined and applied on the multigram scale. A sustainable synthesis of sulfonamides using a copper-catalysed process starting from triarylbismuthines, Na2S2O5 and nitro compounds in a Deep Eutectic Solvent (DES) as a reaction medium is described. Thus, triarylbismuthines are used as reagents for the incorporation of SO2 into organic motifs. The bismuth salts formed as by-products can be easily removed from the crude reaction mixture by precipitation with water, while the use of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as solvents can be avoided in the entire process. The eutectic mixture employed as the solvent is fully characterised, with the preliminary results proving its low toxicity. The designed DES also allows for a novel multicomponent reaction which saves time and reduces purification steps, energy and cost.

Upon Bronsted base organocatalysis, ketone-derived alkylidene Meldrum’s acids proved to be competent vinylogous platforms able to undergo a formal (4+2) cycloaddition reaction with dihydro-2,3-furandione, providing an unprecedented route to 3,6-dihydropyran-2-ones as spiro[4.5]decane derivatives with up to 98 % ee thanks to the commercially available Takemoto catalyst. Preliminary investigation showed that this reaction could be extended to other activated ketones, establishing these alkylidene Meldrum’s acids as a novel C4-synthon in the vinylogous series.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are applied widely in organic catalysis; however, no precedent has been reported in polymerization catalysis. Herein, we report the new application of COFs for polymerization catalysis. Different amounts of homogeneous Rh catalyst are incorporated into the COF via post-treatment to give a series of TPB-DMTP-COF-X wt % Rh (b-e) containing varying amounts of Rh from 2.74 to 11.38 wt %. In contrast to the known Rh catalysts, TPB-DMTP-COF-X wt % Rh (b-e) display an uncommon synergistic effect and exceptional steric confinement effect of nanochannels. Therefore, they possess the advantages of both homogeneous catalysts in high activity and selectivity and heterogeneous catalysts in stability and recyclability with extremely high activity up to 1.3 x 10(7) g . mol(Rh)(-1)center dot h(-1) and cis-selectivity up to 99% and can be readily recycled and reused five times in the polymerization of phenylacetylene and its derivatives, affording cis-transoidal polyphenylacetylene and its derivatives having helical structures, aggregation-induced emission properties, or fluorescence properties with narrow molecular weight distributions.

An efficient additive-free manganese-catalyzed hydrogenation of nitriles to primary amines with molecular hydrogen is described. The pre-catalyst, a well-defined bench-stable alkyl bisphosphine Mn(I) complex fac-[Mn(dpre)(CO)(3)(CH3)] (dpre=1,2-bis(di-n-propylphosphino)ethane), undergoes CO migratory insertion into the manganese-alkyl bond to form acyl complexes which upon hydrogenolysis yields the active coordinatively unsaturated Mn(I) hydride catalyst [Mn(dpre)(CO)(2)(H)]. A range of aromatic and aliphatic nitriles were efficiently and selectively converted into primary amines in good to excellent yields. The hydrogenation of nitriles proceeds at 100 degrees C with a catalyst loading of 2 mol % and a hydrogen pressure of 50 bar. Mechanistic insights are provided by means of DFT calculations.

The Ag/AgBr/TiO2 ternary component nanotube as a heterogeneous photocatalyst was used for the solvent-free oxidation of the benzylic C(sp(3))-H bond to the corresponding carbonyl compound or the solvent-controlled selective oxidative cleavage of the CQC double bond of styrene to benzaldehyde under visible light at room temperature. A wide variety of carbonyl compounds were successfully synthesized through the developed photocatalytic process. Several advantages such as solvent-free conditions, sans additional oxidant, simple reaction, short reaction time, and easy separation of the product promote the reaction to be green. Moreover, the Ag/AgBr/TiO2 nanotubes could be used several times without reduction in their photocatalytic activity.
